Father's Day and Trinity Sunday on the same day could not provide a better opportunity to reflect on God the Father.

Have you ever wondered why no Catholic Church is dedicated to God the Father? Have you ever asked yourself why there is no Feast Day or Votive Mass in honor of God the Father?

It would be redundant. They all already are.

Every Catholic Church and every Mass already is dedicated to God the Father. Our prayer life is ultimately oriented to God the Father... in God the Son through God the Holy Spirit. Almost all the prayers of the Mass are addressed to God the Father. Some of our liturgical prayers at the Holy Sacrifice, such as the Kyrie, Credo and Sanctus, invoke the Trinity.

Only a few of our prayers at the altar are directed to the Second Person of the Holy Trinity and speak of him in anything other than the third person. If that is confusing, please consult a grammarian. At the Gospel, just after the Consecration and just before Holy Communion we speak directly to God the Son. Otherwise we speak of Him at Holy Mass.

Our Lord's earthly life was a continuous act of love for and obedience to His Eternal Father. He eschewed being turned into a solitary kingly figure. Jesus' purpose was to reconcile us now to God the Father and eventually to bring us into His Father's House. The only prayer that He taught us is Our Father. The door to heaven is baptism, by which we become adopted children of God the Father.

You are a child of God. That is your dignity. That is our identity. What glory!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
