Baptisms typically are scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Please schedule your little one’s baptism one month in advance through the Parish Office. Parents are required to complete Baptism Preparation either online or in-person with one of our priests. Please contact the Parish Office to make arrangements.
Receiving the Sacrament of Penance for the first time precedes First Holy Communion. First Penance usually takes place at the beginning of Lent. We have a year-long preparation program that takes place through St. John Beloved Academy or through St. John Religious Education. Please register during the summer before 2nd Grade.
Receiving the Most Blessed Sacrament for the first time is one of the highlights of childhood. We usually schedule a special Mass for all parish children to receive First Holy Communion on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The year-long preparation is coupled with preparation for First Confession. Please register during the Summer before 2nd Grade.
Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is a two-year catechesis which is completed through the Religious Education Office. Please register during the Summer before 7th Grade.
The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit:
[Christ], our Lord and God, was once and for all to offer himself to God the Father by his death on the altar of the cross, to accomplish there an everlasting redemption. But because his priesthood was not to end with his death, at the Last Supper “on the night when he was betrayed,” [he wanted] to leave to his beloved spouse the Church a visible sacrifice (as the nature of man demands) by which the bloody sacrifice which he was to accomplish once for all on the cross would be re-presented, its memory perpetuated until the end of the world, and its salutary power be applied to the forgiveness of the sins we daily commit. (Council of Trent, 1562: DS 1740; cf. 1Cor 11,23; Heb 7,24.27)
Parishioners who are homebound will be visited by one of our priests for prayer, blessing, Confession, and Holy Communion. We are happy to arrange for extraordinary ministers to help with those visits moving forward.
Congratulations on your engagement! Since Baptized Catholics are required to marry according to the laws of the Catholic Church, it is essential to contact a priest as soon as the engagement is final. Diocesan regulations require that the couple contact a parish priest at least six (6) months prior to the proposed date of the wedding. Please call the Parish Office to begin making arrangements.
All those suffering grave illness should receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament goes hand-in-hand with receiving the Sacrament of Penance.
Your loved ones who are approaching death should receive the Anointing of the Sick AND the Apostolic Pardon. Please contact a priest through the Parish Office as soon as possible.
All baptized Christians in danger of death may receive the Sacraments from a Catholic priest – without becoming Catholic themselves – provided they demonstrate faith in the Sacraments and freely request a priest to bring them Penance and Anointing of the Sick.
If you are calling after office hours, please call our Emergency Line at 703-307-4750.
On behalf of all your fellow parishioners, the priests and staff of Saint John the Beloved Church extend to your family our prayerful sympathy in this time of loss and grief. There are many people praying for you and with you. At Sunday Mass we all pray especially for those of the parish family who have passed away recently. The Mass of Christian Burial that is celebrated in this parish community honors the ancient tradition of the classic Requiem Mass, employing Scriptural prayers and monastic chants that have been used at the burial rites of Christians for far more than one thousand years. In the Sacred Liturgy we experience the consolation of praying with each other, with the whole Church, with all the saints and with Jesus Christ Himself and of having them pray for us. This tangible connection with the Communion of Saints, those who pray for us in heaven and even those who still need us to pray for them, can be a comfort and consolation for us as we mourn the loss of a loved one.
