SHARE, INC. is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1969 by individuals as well as religious and civic organizations that combined their efforts to meet emergency needs in McLean, Great Falls, Pimmit Hills, and surrounding areas. SHARE, INC. is sustained by donations of food, clothing, furniture and money, and is administered by volunteers, for a SHARING, person-to-person contact. St. John Parish supports Share through a collection of food and money on the third Sunday of each month as well as participation in the annual Food Drive, Thanksgiving & Christmas Food Basket programs and the Christmas Gift Store. Volunteers are needed for committees on food, clothing, furniture, transportation and family assistance and for the Share Sunday collection at St. John. To volunteer or for more information please call the Parish office (703) 356-7916 or the Share Answering Service (703) 284-2179. St. Peter Claver Society for African Orphans of AIDS The impact of HIV/AIDS has been devastating in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly for the 12 million children on the continent orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Extended families are stretched beyond endurance and cannot care for nephews and nieces who have lost their parents. Many orphans who are heading the household are only at the tender age of 11 or 12. St. Peter Claver Society for African Orphans of AIDS was established at ST. John in September 2004 to support three projects for these orphans: - The Bill and Bertha Schilling Good Samaritan Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, is an orphanage formed by Fr. Cosmas K'Otienoh in mid-2003 through a very generous donation from St. John parishioner Bill Schilling. Good Samaritan supports more than 45 children with tuition in orphanage boarding schools. St. Peter Society receives its funds from monthly church tithing, fundraising activities held throughout the year, and personal donations. If you are interested in volunteering to serve on the committee, or wish to make a donation, please contact Nancy Wiese, Secretary and co-Chair, at 571-436-8310. Companions in Christ Companions in Christ is an organization that unites the parish community by providing assistance to those parishioners who need it most, particularly the elderly. For example, elderly parishioners may need assistance with grocery shopping, rides to doctor appointments, or rides to church. Others may be lonely and simply need a friend to visit them occasionally. Companions in Christ is a wonderful organization that enables you to meet new people while helping out in the community. We also seek to unite Catholics within neighborhoods. If you are interested in becoming a Companion in Christ, please contact Beth Anderson at 703-536-2298. We will keep in touch with you through phone and e-mail. Thank you! Christ House Volunteers On the 2nd Friday of every month at the Catholic Charities-run Christ House Shelter in Alexandria, a team of volunteers from St. John the Beloved prepares and serves a nutritious, well balanced evening meal. On average, we feed 65-75 homeless persons and families. If you are interested in participating in this important outreach ministry, please contact Barbara Jo Harrick, 703-533-9623, the new Christ House coordinator or click here to email Barbara. Thank you. |
