HOW DO WE DO DOOR-TO-DOOR EVANGELIZATION AT ST. JOHN THE BELOVED?

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE KNOCKING?
Smile! Notice their house number so you can take notes after your contact. Pray.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER KNOCKING?
Smile! Take a step back to the give them room to open the door(s) themselves. Pray the “Hail Mary” slowly. If there is noise inside the house, wait a little longer and pray another slow “Hail Mary”. Otherwise, attached a Door Knob Hanger… on… the… doorknob! See the section entitled “Conclusion”.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THEY OPEN THE DOOR?
Smile! Offer an introduction as you hand them a flyer...

INTRODUCTION
“Hi there. How are you? I’m from St. John Church over on Old Dominion. We just set our summer schedule and are handing out copies to everyone in the neighborhood.”

IF THEIR DOG WAS BARKING…
“Hi there. Sorry to get your dog(s) all riled up. I’m from St. John Church. We just set our summer schedule and are handing out copies to everyone. Have a good day.”

IF THEY DON’T WANT TO BE DISTURBED…
“Hi there. I’m sorry to disturb you. I’m from St. John Church. We just set our summer schedule and are handing out copies to everyone. Have a good day.”

IF THEY SAY THEY BELONG TO ANOTHER CHURCH…
“That’s great. Everyone is welcome to our events regardless of what church they attend. We do have some unique things at St. John. There is a great Thrift Shop and we just might have the best BBQ in McLean.”

WHAT IF THE ADULT SAYS SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT CATHOLICS OR THE CHURCH?
Listen. “I’m sorry to upset you. That was not my purpose. I am sure one of our priests would be happy to listen if you are interested. Their contact information is on this flyer.”

WHAT DO I DO AFTER SAYING GOODBYE?
Walk back to the street, taking down some notes so that your priests can follow up as appropriate.

WHAT IF NOBODY ANSWERS THE DOOR?
Leave a flyer on the door knob.

GOD BLESS YOU!

Fr. CJP

P.S. WHY AM I DOING THIS?
Because Jesus said “Go make disciples of all nations!” (Matthew 28,20) and also because it’s fun!
