At a formation session one evening the seminary rector told us emphatically with regard to preaching:

“Never repeat yourself! Never repeat yourself!”

His memorable lesson makes me cautious to mention past events except for the fact that they were so successful and enjoyable for the participants.

The door-to-door evangelization teams, having ventured out on St. Nicholas Day replete with red furry hats trimmed in white, reported back that they had a wonderful experience. The age range was magnificent. Hopefully this becomes not only the signature apostolate for seventhgraders preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation but also a favorite occasional if not even monthly activity. Dave Scully has been leading a great committee. Please contact him if you would like to help organize evangelization efforts OR participate from time to time in these events OR go door-to-door in your neighborhood but on your own schedule.

Equally impressive was the Advent Lessons & Carols that took place last Sunday in the Parish Hall under the direction of Alexandra Baldwin and Elizabeth Black. Mrs. Baldwin recomposed the traditional service and transformed it into a Medieval Marian experience. Sacred Scripture from Genesis, Isaiah, Jeremiah, St. Luke and St. Mark were paired with religious compositions by Alfonso X El Sabio, Henriette Renié and others along with poetry by Eleanor C. Donnelly, Condé Benoist Pallen, Rainer Maria Rilke and E. Seaton. All present joined in familiar carols such as O Come O Come Emmanuel, Behold a Virgin Bearing Him, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus and On Jordan’s Bank. Many rehearsals by First Light Ensemble and our very own Girls’ Choir made for a spectacular evening. Prosecco afterwards did nothing to dim the mood. You will want to come next year. Since we nearly filled the Parish Hall this year we may need a larger venue in 2015. What a wonderful problem to have to solve.

May God bless the remainder of your Advent season. Please take advantage of the extra confession times that begin at the end of this week. It will be Christmas before you know it.

God bless you! God bless you!

Fr. Christopher J. Pollard
